[00:00:01] Every mile of highway tells a story. Most are ordinary. Some are tragic. But scattered across the world are roads where the stories refuse to end. Drivers report passengers who vanish without opening a door. Police investigate phantom crashes that never happen. Truckers describe impossible lights pacing them through the darkness. Entire stretches of highway have earned reputation so unsettling that locals
[00:00:31] refuse to travel them after sunset. Maybe they're legends. Maybe they're coincidence. Or maybe there are places where the line between our world and something we don't yet understand grows just a little thinner. Tonight, we're leaving the safety of the interstate behind as we travel the world's most haunted roads. So buckle up and keep your eyes on the road. You never know who or what might be waiting just around the bend.
[00:01:01] I'm not gonna stand here and listen to this. Baloney. You won't know. He doesn't stand for baloney. Sounds like a lot of supernatural baloney to me. Perhaps not.
[00:01:34] Our first journey takes us to Archer Avenue in Justice, Illinois. There are certain roads that seem to collect stories. Not because they're especially dangerous. Not because they're hidden away in some forgotten corner of the county. In fact, many of them are traveled every single day.
[00:01:54] By people who have no idea they're driving across ground that has inspired decades, sometimes generations of whispered conversations, unexplained encounters. Most haunted places ask you to come looking for them. You visit an old asylum, an abandoned prison, or a crumbling Victorian mansion because you already expect something unusual might happen there.
[00:02:19] But haunted roads are different. You don't buy a ticket. You don't take a guided tour. You simply find yourself behind the wheel, heading home after a long night when something entirely unexpected steps into your headlights. Perhaps no American ghost story captures the unsettling possibility better than the legend of Resurrection Mary.
[00:02:44] For nearly a century, motorists traveling Archer Avenue on Chicago's southwest side have reported encounters with the same mysterious young woman. The details change slightly depending on who's telling the story. But the heart of it remains remarkably consistent. A lone woman appears walking along the road late at night. A passing driver offers her a ride.
[00:03:09] He climbs into the car, exchanges only a few quiet pleasantries, and then, somewhere before the journey is over, she disappears as though she had never been there at all. Legends like this often grow larger with each retelling, and Resurrection Mary is no exception.
[00:03:27] Historians have spent decades trying to untangle fact from folklore, tracing newspaper archives, police records, and cemetery documents in hopes of identifying the woman who may have inspired the story. Several names have been suggested over the years, but none of them have ever proven beyond doubt that uncertainty has only strengthened the legend.
[00:03:51] After all, a mystery without a definitive answer has a way of surviving far longer than anyone's neatly explained. The story most people know begins on an otherwise unremarkable evening. The man was driving home along Archer Avenue after midnight. The streets had grown quiet, and the glow of the city had faded behind him. His headlights carved a narrow path through the darkness when he noticed someone walking along the shoulder of the road.
[00:04:20] She was young, blonde according to most accounts, dressed in a light-colored dress that looked oddly formal for someone walking alone so late at night. She wasn't trying to wave anyone down, she didn't appear frantic or injured, and she simply walked at a steady pace with her eyes fixed ahead, as though she knew exactly where she was going. The driver slowed alongside her and rolled down his window. Are you alright? Do you need a ride?
[00:04:49] She hesitated, only briefly, before thanking him and climbing into the passenger seat. At first, there was nothing particularly unusual about her. She spoke politely. Her voice was soft, but it was confident. When he asked where she was headed, she only gave simple directions, asking him to continue straight for a while before making an occasional turn.
[00:05:12] She volunteered almost nothing about herself, and while the silence might have felt awkward with someone else, it somehow didn't with her. Instead, there was an unmistakable sadness about her, as though her thoughts were somewhere far beyond the passing streetlights. The driver tried to make conversation. He asked if she'd been out with friends, whether she lived nearby, if someone was expecting her.
[00:05:41] She always answered politely, but briefly, never offering enough information to satisfy his curiosity. Looking back later, he would struggle to remember anything specific about the conversation at all. It was almost as though the details slipped away the moment they were spoken. After several minutes, the young woman quietly asked him to pull over. He looked around, expecting to see a neighborhood, a driveway, or perhaps another waiting car. There was none.
[00:06:11] Only the dark outline of iron fencing stretching into the night. Assuming this was where she wanted to be, he eased the car onto the shoulder and shifted into park. She smiled, thanked him once again for the ride, stepped from the vehicle, and began walking away. The driver waited for a moment before pulling back onto the road. Almost instinctively, he glanced into the rearview mirror, wanting to make sure she safely reached wherever she was going.
[00:06:42] But as you guessed, she wasn't there. He frowned. He checked his side mirror. Still nothing. Certain that she couldn't have just disappeared in the few seconds it took him to look away, he stopped the car, climbed out, and searched the roadside. There were no houses. No side streets. No alleyways. No place for someone to just disappear that quickly.
[00:07:09] The only landmark standing in the darkness was the entrance to Resurrection Cemetery. Confused, more than a little unsettled, he eventually continued home, convinced he had somehow missed seeing where the young woman had gone. It wasn't until later, when he shared this strange experience with local residents, that the story took an even stranger turn. Before he had finished describing the woman, someone interrupted him.
[00:07:38] She was young, right? He nodded. Blonde? Again, he nodded. Wearing a light-colored dress? When he answered yes for the third time, the room reportedly fell silent. Finally, someone leaned forward and said words that countless other drivers would hear over the decades that followed. Well, then you just met Resurrection Mary.
[00:08:04] From that point forward, similar stories began surfacing with surprising regularity. Different drivers, different years, different weather. Yet the descriptions remained remarkably alike. Young woman walking along alone on Archer Avenue. A courteous request for a ride, a quiet journey, and a destination that seemed to exist somewhere between the living and the dead.
[00:08:28] Whether Resurrection Mary is the restless spirit of a young woman lost too soon, a legend strengthened by decades of retelling, or an extraordinary example of how folklore can shape what people believe they've witnessed remains an open question. But what cannot be denied is this. Long before the internet, long before social media allowed ghost stories to spread around the world in a matter of minutes, people who had never met one another.
[00:08:58] Or describing the same lonely figure walking the same lonely stretch of road. And nearly a century later, drivers are still watching the shoulder of Archer Avenue. Just in case someone is waiting for a ride. If Resurrection Mary is America's most famous ghostly hitchhiker, well then Clinton Road may be America's most unpredictably weird highway.
[00:09:25] This isn't the story of a single ghost or one tragic event that left an indelible mark on the landscape. This is the story of a place where dozens of seemingly unrelated mysteries have converged for generations. For reasons no one has ever adequately explained, this lonely stretch of northern New Jersey has become a magnet for the unexplained. Spend enough time talking with people who live nearby and you'll notice something unusual.
[00:09:55] They rarely argue about whether Clinton Road is strange. They argue about which strange story happened to them. After midnight, Clinton Road stops feeling like a road and starts feeling like a tunnel. The trees lean over the pavement until their branches nearly meet overhead. Swallowing the moonlight and leaving your headlights to do all the work.
[00:10:19] For roughly ten miles, the road winds through the forests of West Milford, crossing reservoirs, rocky hillsides, and dense woodland where civilization seems to disappear only a few feet beyond the edge of the asphalt. There are no storefronts, no neighborhoods, and very few signs that anyone is nearby. If your car were to break down here, you'd quickly discover just how alone you really are.
[00:10:47] And it's easy to understand why the imagination begins working overtime in a place like this. But imagination alone doesn't explain why the stories have persisted for so long. For decades, locals have offered visitors the same simple advice. If you don't have to drive Clinton Road after dark, don't.
[00:11:10] Unlike most haunted places, Clinton Road doesn't owe its reputation to one famous haunting or a single documented tragedy. Instead, it seems to collect mysteries. Regeneration adds another layer to its mythology. Ask five long-time residents about the road and you're likely to hear five entirely different stories. Some describe phantom headlights racing up behind them before disappearing in the thin air.
[00:11:38] Others talk about strange lights weaving silently through the trees. Hunters have reported hearing voices deep in the forest where no one could possibly have been. While campers tell of whistles circling their campsites just beyond the reach of their flashlights, even seasoned police officers have admitted that the road attracts an unusual number of calls involving incidents that ultimately defy explanation.
[00:12:07] Yet, upon all those stories, one has become almost inseparable from Clinton Road itself. It begins at a small stone bridge spanning a quiet creek. Today, people know it simply as Ghost Boy Bridge. And according to local legend, a young boy lost his life beneath that bridge many years ago. Exactly how it happened depends on who's telling the story.
[00:12:34] Some insist he drowned after falling into the creek while fishing. Others believe he was pushed from the bridge. And yet another version claims heavy flood waters swept him away before anyone could reach him. Historians have searched for a definitive event that might explain the legend, but no single tragedy has ever been conclusively linked to the story. Curiously, that uncertainty has never weakened the legend.
[00:13:02] If anything, it made people even more determined to experience it for themselves. Visitors still arrive with pockets full of coins hoping to test one of Clinton Road's oldest traditions. The ritual is deceptively simple. Stand in the center of the bridge, face the water below, and drop a coin into the creek. Then wait.
[00:13:27] Some witnesses claim they hear the splash, followed moments later by another metallic sound behind them. When they turn around, they find a coin laying on the pavement where no one had been before. Others insist they watched the coin rise back through the water before landing at their feet. A handful of people even claim the briefest glimpse of a small figure beneath the bridge before it disappeared into the darkness.
[00:13:56] Of course, skeptics have offered perfectly reasonable explanations. The creek is shallow in places. Rocks could cause a coin to ricochet in an unexpected way. And visitors might unknowingly mistake another coin already lying on the bridge for the one that they'd just thrown. Once a legend becomes widely known, expectation has this uncanny ability to shape what people believe they've witnessed.
[00:14:24] Even so, people who dismiss the ghost story often admit something they have difficulty explaining. The bridge feels... different. Perhaps it's the isolation. Maybe it's the silence. Or perhaps it's the realization that thousands of people stood in that exact same spot asking themselves exactly the same question. What if the story is true?
[00:14:53] But Ghost Boy Bridge is only the beginning. Continue driving north and Clinton Road seems determined to become stranger with every passing mile. Motorists have described headlights suddenly appearing in their rearview mirrors, racing toward them at impossible speeds before vanishing without ever passing.
[00:15:12] Others have reported pickup trucks following them for miles, maintaining the same distance through every curve, only to disappear entirely when the road bends or the trees momentarily block the view. Hunters have spoken of hearing conversations echoing through the woods where no people were present. Campers tell stories of whistles moving around their campsites, always remaining just beyond the reach of their lights.
[00:15:40] Even experienced outdoorsmen have admitted that the forest surrounding Clinton Road has a peculiar way of making ordinary sounds feel anything but ordinary. Adding another layer to the road's reputation is the abandoned jungle habitat property. Once a drive-through safari park operated by Warner Brothers during the 1970s, when the attraction closed after a series of financial and operational failures, nature slowly reclaimed the property.
[00:16:10] Rusting animal enclosures disappeared beneath vines. Empty service roads vanished into the forest. Before long, rumors began circulating that dangerous animals had escaped into the surrounding wilderness. While many of those stories were almost certainly exaggerated, the abandoned park gave the public imagination fertile ground on which to build entirely new legends.
[00:16:32] People claimed to see enormous black dogs watching silently from the tree line. Others reported glowing eyes reflecting from the darkness before disappearing the moment they were approached. Stories of witches, occult ceremonies, and secret gatherings became part of Clinton Road over the years, although investigators have found very little credible evidence supporting many of those claims. And perhaps that's precisely what makes Clinton Road so compelling.
[00:17:00] Most haunted places are remembered for one story, one ghost, one tragedy. But Clinton Road refuses to be that simple. Instead, it has become a kind of paranormal crossroads, a place where nearly every category of unexplained experience has been reported at one time or another. Whether those encounters share a common cause, or whether decades of folklore have encouraged people to interpret ordinary events for an extraordinary lens, remains possible.
[00:17:29] But impossible to confirm. But even today, ask someone from West Milford about Clinton Road and chances are, they'll smile before answering. Not because they believe every story, but because they've heard enough of them. From enough people to know that there's something about that lonely stretch of pavement that continues to inspire mysteries generations after generations. And maybe every one of those stories has a perfectly ordinary explanation. Maybe the lights have natural causes.
[00:17:58] Maybe the sounds belong to wildlife. Maybe the phantom vehicles are nothing more than tricks of darkness and distance. Or maybe some roads remember more than the people who travel them. We'll pull over for a quick refueling before continuing our journey. When we come back, we'll head west to America's most famous highway, Route 66, where nearly 2,500 miles of pavement have collected enough ghost stories to fill an entire library. Stay with us. There's plenty of roads still ahead.
[00:18:28] Every great road tells the story of the people who traveled it. Few roads have carried more hopes, dreams, heartbreak, and history than Route 66. Stretching nearly 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, the mother road became more than a highway. It became a symbol of America itself. Families fleeing the Dusk Bowl headed west, believing a better life waited beyond the next state line. Soldiers returned home along its pavement after World War II.
[00:18:58] Truck drivers, honeymooners, musicians, drifters, and dreamers all found themselves following the same ribbon of asphalt. Or destinations that promised something better than what they'd left behind. Millions made the journey. But not all of them reached the end. Perhaps that's why Route 66 has accumulated so many ghost stories of the past century.
[00:19:20] Unlike Clinton Road, where strange experiences seem concentrated within a few lonely miles of forest, Route 66 is a collection of hundreds of local legends, each one tied to a different town, motel, cafe, bridge, or forgotten stretch of pavement. Taken individually, they're intriguing. Taken together, they create the impression that America's most famous highway has become a living museum of the unexplained.
[00:19:49] And perhaps that's because Route 66 has never been just one place. It's thousands of places connected by a single road. Every small town it passes through has its own history. Every forgotten motel has welcomed weary travelers. Every roadside diner has served coffee to people chasing a dream or trying to outrun a disappointment.
[00:20:15] Every weathered gas station has watched generations come and go. For decades, those moments accumulated one stop at a time until the mother road became something much larger than the pavement itself. Today, much of Route 66 feels suspended between two eras. Modern traffic races by on the interstate while the old highway waits quietly beneath the faded neon signs. Cracked sidewalks and storefronts that have been changed in decades.
[00:20:45] Some communities have embraced that history, restoring vintage motels and classic diners to their former glory. Others remain almost exactly as they were when the traffic stopped coming, leaving behind places where time seems to move just a little more slowly. It's in those places that many of the highway's strangest stories begin. One of the best known is the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico.
[00:21:13] Built back in 1937, the hotel quickly became a favorite destination for Hollywood actors filming westerns throughout the Southwest. John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Ronald Reagan, Spencer Tracy, Errol Flynn, and even Kirk Douglas all spent time there. And their photographs still line the lobby walls as reminders of a remarkable chapter in American film history.
[00:21:38] Over the years, however, the El Rancho has become known for something besides its famous guests. Employees have described hearing footsteps crossing empty hallways long after everyone had gone to bed. Housekeepers have reported doors opening by themselves and furniture that appeared to have been moved between shifts.
[00:21:58] Guests have spoken of waking in the middle of the night with the distinct feeling that someone or something was watching and standing quietly beside their bed. They reach for the bedside lamp, switch it on, and discover there's no one in the room. Whether those experiences are evidence of lingering spirits or simply the sounds and sensations that accompany an old historic building, it's impossible to know.
[00:22:26] Yet generation after generation of travelers continue to leave with remarkably similar stories. And that's often what gives a haunting its staying power. Farther west, the landscape changes again. Communities such as Glen Rio straddling the Texas-New Mexico border stand as reminders of what Route 66 once was.
[00:22:50] Abandoned service stations, weathered motels, empty cafes, fading signs still line the highway preserved not because anyone intended them to become museums, but because time simply moved on without them. Spend an evening walking those empty streets? It's easy to understand why visitors often describe an overwhelming feeling that the town isn't abandoned at all.
[00:23:15] The wind moves through broken windows, old signs creak overhead, and silence settles over the buildings in a way that almost feels expectant. Local residents have long told stories of music drifting from buildings that have stood empty for decades. Others reported lights appearing inside the structures where electricity hasn't flowed in generations.
[00:23:40] Photographers exploring the deserted streets occasionally speak of the unsettling sensation that someone is watching them, only to discover they're completely alone. Then, there is Devil's Elbow, Missouri, where Route 66 winds through the Ozark Mountains before crossing the Big Piney River.
[00:23:59] The area has witnessed devastating floods, deadly automobile accidents, and nearly a century of travelers making their way across one of the most scenic stretches of the Mother Road. Over the years, motorists have reported seeing strange lights hovering near the old bridge after dark, while others have described hearing distant voices carried across the river on perfectly still nights, despite finding no one else nearby.
[00:24:26] Whether those stories are rooted in folklore, natural phenomena, or something genuinely unexplained remains a matter of debate. But they have become as much a part of the Devil's Elbow as the bridge itself. Skeptics, of course, would argue that there's nothing particularly mysterious about any of this. Historic buildings settle in creek as they age, desert heat creates mirages that can fool even experienced travelers,
[00:24:52] and wind carries voices in distant sounds in surprising ways, especially across open country and isolated places. I've always encouraged the imagination to fill in the blanks where certainty doesn't exist. Those are reasonable explanations, and in many cases, they may be the correct ones. Yet perhaps the strangest stories surrounding Route 66 don't come from its hotels or abandoned towns at all. They come from the empty desert itself.
[00:25:20] Travel a few miles east of Winslow, Arizona, and you'll come to what remains of a place called Two Guns. Today it's little more than crumbling stone buildings, abandoned trading posts, and a weathered remains of a once thriving stop along Route 66. Most travelers pass by without even giving it a second glance. Those who stay after dark. Sometimes they report something far more difficult to dismiss.
[00:25:45] For decades, people have described strange lights appearing across the desert surrounding the abandoned town. Unlike distant headlights of aircraft, these lights don't travel in straight lines. Witnesses describe glowing spheres that drift silently above the ground before suddenly changing direction, splitting apart, or disappearing altogether. Some seem to pace vehicles traveling the old highway while others hover motionless for several minutes before fading into the darkness.
[00:26:12] Local folklore offers no shortage of explanations. Some believe the lights are connected to Apache legends surrounding the nearby canyon Diablo. Others insist they're spirits of people who died during violent conflicts that once plagued the settlement. Skeptics point to atmospheric conditions, temperature inversions, or distant vehicle lights distorted by the desert air. Whatever they are, people are still reporting them.
[00:26:40] Nearly a century after Route 66 first crossed this lonely stretch of Arizona, travelers continue pulling to the shoulder, switching off their engines and waiting to see. But the desert has one more mystery to resolve. Across the United States, and in fact in countries around the world, there are stretches of roadway where visitors swear the laws of physics simply stop behaving the way they should.
[00:27:04] Drive to what appears to be the bottom of a hill, place your vehicle in neutral, take your foot off the brake, and instead of rolling downhill as every instinct tells you it should, the car slowly begins moving uphill. Thousands of people have tried the experiment for themselves. Many arrive convinced they'll expose the trick in a matter of minutes.
[00:27:26] Most leave scratching their heads because, even after witnessing it firsthand, what they experienced doesn't seem to agree with what their own eyes insist they saw. These places have become known by many different names. Some communities call them Gravity Hills. Others know them as Mystery Hills, Magnetic Hills, or Spook Hills. Whatever the name, the experience is almost always the same, and so are the legends that have grown around them.
[00:27:55] Every town seems to have its own explanation. Some speak of ancient curses. Others tell stories of tragic accidents. And a few insist unseen spirits continue protecting travelers from dangers that claimed lives long ago. Perhaps the best known example is Spook Hill in Lake Wales, Florida. The official roadside marker tells a story that has become part of a local tradition.
[00:28:20] Long before paved roads and automobiles, a massive alligator was said to have terrorized the region until a sentinel warrior confronted the beast in a battle so fierce that both lost their lives. Now, according to the legend, the hill where they fought has never truly been at rest. And generations later, people began claiming that vehicles placed in neutral would inexplicably roll uphill as though some unseen force were still at work beneath the pavement.
[00:28:49] Local folklore insists it's the spirit of that warrior continuing to protect those who pass through the area. Now, whether anyone believes that explanation is almost beside the point. Every year, thousands of visitors stop at Spook Hill to see whether the legend lives up to its reputation. Families arrive expecting to uncover a clever roadside trick.
[00:29:13] Children climb into the backseat giggling while parents debate whether there's a hidden magnet buried beneath the pavement or some elaborate mechanical device concealed below the road. Yet the moment the driver shifts the car into neutral and eases off the brake, the conversation almost always changes. Whatever explanation people expected to find suddenly seems less certain. Because the experience unfolding in front of them doesn't agree with what their own eyes insist they're seeing.
[00:29:42] Pennsylvania offers another famous Gravity Hill, although the story attached to it is considerably more heartbreaking. According to a local tradition, a school bus carrying children stalled on a set of railroad tracks before being struck by an oncoming train. Visitors are told that if they stop their vehicle on the tracks, shift into neutral, and allow it to roll, unseen hands will gently push the car to safety before another tragedy can occur.
[00:30:09] Some virgins of the legend even encourage people to dust baby powder across the trunk or rear bumper beforehand, claiming that tiny handprints will appear after the invisible children have finished their work. As a matter of fact, that was featured in an episode of The X-Files. It's an unforgettable story, and one that has been passed from generation to generation.
[00:30:33] The difficulty is that investigators have repeatedly searched for evidence that the tragedy actually occurred, and in many cases have come away empty handed. Similar stories appear all over North America, often attached to entirely different roads and completely different railroad crossings. The details change from town to town, but the legend itself remains remarkably consistent, suggesting that the folklore may have traveled much farther than the history that supposedly inspired it.
[00:31:01] Eventually, almost every conversation about Gravity Hills arrives at the same question. If this isn't paranormal, then what is it? Surveyors, engineers, and geologists have examined these locations for decades, and their explanation is surprisingly elegant. The human brain judges elevation by comparing the horizon with surrounding landmarks such as trees, hillsides, utility poles, and fence lines.
[00:31:30] In certain landscapes, those visual references become distorted, creating an optical illusion so convincing that a road which is actually descending appears to be climbing. Scientific instruments consistently demonstrate that gravity is behaving exactly as it should. It's only our perception that's being fooled. What's fascinating is that knowing the explanation rarely diminishes the experience.
[00:31:56] Visitors who understand the science still find themselves arguing with their own senses. Their eyes insist the impossible is in fact happening, even while their rational minds know better. But for a few moments, certainty gives way to doubt, and people are reminded just how easily the human brain can be convinced that reality has changed when in fact it's our perception that's being challenged.
[00:32:24] I'll take you off the road for just a moment. There's a perfect example of this, and I learned it the hard way myself. Going to see the Blair Witch Project. Now remember, when this movie originally came out, it was touted as a real story, that this was real footage uncovered and a real story. I went to the theater to watch this. And like many of you, my heart raced. My palms sweated. I felt uncomfortable throughout the movie.
[00:32:50] I watched in awe and total suspense of disbelief because I believed that this footage was real. But one thing was certain, as the movie progressed, I became more and more ill. My fear started to become irrational, thinking that maybe, maybe something about this footage was affecting me. Something paranormal, something sinister, something occult-like. Did the witch's presence have an effect on the people in the theater?
[00:33:20] I saw many people around me getting very uncomfortable. Shifting in their seats, dabbing at their brows. And I thought, well, this movie is very intense and certainly frightening. But that didn't seem to explain it. Before the movie could end, I had to excuse myself where I violently got sick in the bathroom at the movie theater. I never got to see the end of the Blair Witch Project until years later when I just tuned in to check out the end of the movie to see what actually happened.
[00:33:48] Knowing full well that at that point it was just a movie and there was nothing supernatural about it. Spoiler alert. Sorry, I guess I should have said that at the beginning. But it wasn't until years later when I went to see the Cloverfield movie with Chris Fleming and Patrick Burns and a few friends in Sox Center at the Little Main Street Cinema. And again, it started to have that effect. I started feeling queasy and nauseous. I couldn't understand what was taking place.
[00:34:14] I knew that this had nothing to do with witchcraft or paranormal activity, but something was definitely affecting me. It left me after the movie searching for an answer. And to show you just how quickly we can be tricked by our own eyes. What was actually happening was in this setting, much like the one player video games where you're looking over the top of your gun as you're moving through a building,
[00:34:39] or looking through a haunted place, is if the screen is big enough and the orientation is set just right, your brain begins to think that you've been poisoned. And you begin sweating and feeling nauseous to try to purge the poison. And that's how quickly and effectively our body can react to things like this. And perhaps that's why Gravity Hills continue to fascinate us. They're one of the few mysteries almost everyone can experience firsthand.
[00:35:05] And you don't need to spend the night inside of a haunted asylum, wait for an apparition appear, or hope a ghost decides to reveal itself. The roads we're about to explore are different. These are places where drivers have reported encounters that seem to end not with understanding, but with an even deeper mystery. Strange headlights appear where there are no vehicles. Travelers encounter people who simply vanish.
[00:35:31] Entire automobiles seem to disappear without leaving as much as a trace. And before the night is over, we'll visit one lonely stretch of highway where witnesses insist briefly they cross into a place where time itself no longer behave the way it should. So buckle up once again, because our journey across the world's most paranormal roads is about to take an even stranger turn.
[00:35:55] Anyone who's spent enough time driving alone at night knows that your attention eventually begins shifting between the road ahead and your rearview mirror. It's almost instinctive. Every few moments you glance up to see who might be behind you, how quickly they're closing the distance and whether you'll soon have company on what had been an otherwise empty highway. Reports of phantom headlights have surfaced on isolated highways throughout Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Nevada, and dozens of other states.
[00:36:24] One particularly well-known stretch lies near Saratoga, Texas, where generations of motorists have described seeing unexplained lights approach them behind before disappearing without warning. Similar accounts have emerged from rural highways separated by hundreds of miles involving witnesses who had never heard one another's stories until long after their own experience had taken place.
[00:36:47] It was well after midnight when Larry Stevens left Farmington, New Mexico and pointed his car south toward home. He had made the drive more times than he cared to count, and there was nothing about it that gave him reason to be concerned. Route 666 cut through miles of empty high desert, and once the last lights of town disappeared in the rearview mirror, the only company he expected for the next hour would be the occasional truck hauling freight across the four corners.
[00:37:16] The radio faded in and out with every passing mile until he finally switched it off. Outside his windshield, there were darkness interrupted now and then by the pale glow of the center line reflecting in the headlights. It was the kind of drive where your mind begins to wander because there's so little demanding your attention. Then he glanced into the rearview mirror. A pair of headlights had appeared behind him.
[00:37:43] At first, he barely noticed them. Another vehicle on the highway was hardly unusual. And from the way the lights were closing distance, he assumed it was a semi-truck, making up time on the long open stretch of road. He eased slightly to the right side of the lane, expecting the driver to pass within a minute or two. Instead, the headlights continued closing until they filled the mirror. The glare became almost blinding. They could no longer make out the shape of the truck behind him.
[00:38:12] Only two brilliant beams of light and the deep growl of a diesel engine that seemed close enough to rattle the windows of his car. He waited for the truck to pull onto the opposite lane. And it did. Thinking perhaps the driver wanted him to speed up, he pressed harder on the accelerator. The truck matched him. He slowed back down, slowed with him. Every change he made was answered instantly as though the vehicle behind him wasn't trying to pass at all.
[00:38:43] It was simply staying there, only a few feet from his bumper. By now, irritation had given way to genuine fear. He later said that he became convinced the truck was going to hit him. There was no shoulder wide enough to escape onto, no nearby town, and almost no traffic coming from the opposite direction. The highway stretched ahead in an empty ribbon of asphalt, while the headlights behind him grew so bright that they washed out everything inside the car.
[00:39:12] The next curve was gentle, the kind he'd driven through dozens of times before. He held the wheel tightly, expecting that if the truck stayed that close it would surely rear-end him before they reached the straightaway. He came out of the curve, looked into the mirror, and there was nothing there. Not a truck disappearing into the distance, not taillights turning onto a side road. It was nothing. He slowed almost to a stop and searched the highway behind him.
[00:39:40] The desert was flat for miles in every direction, and under the moonlight he could see enough of the road to know there was nowhere a tractor trailer could have gone in the few seconds his eyes had been on the pavement ad. The truck had simply ceased to exist. Shaken, he continued to the next service station, more interested in getting around other people than filling his gas tank. When he told the clerk what had happened, expecting an embarrassed smile or dismissive shrug, he received something else entirely.
[00:40:10] The man behind the counter listened without interrupting, then quietly asked, Did it stay right on your bumper? The driver nodded. Was it a black truck? Another nod. The clerk leaned against the counter and said, You're not the first person who's walked in here talking about it. That simple response is one of the reasons the legend has survived for so many years. Versions of the same story have circulated throughout the Four Corners region for decades.
[00:40:39] Truck drivers, tourists, law enforcement officers, and local residents have all claimed to encounter an enormous black semi that appears out of nowhere, bears down on them with terrifying speed, refuses to pass, and then vanishes without leaving so much as a trace. Some insist the truck has no visible license plate or company markings. Others remember only the overwhelming glare of its headlights and the certainty that they were about to die.
[00:41:08] The highway itself may have lost its infamous number when Route 666 became US 491, but changing the signs never erased the stories. In fact, many long-time residents will tell you that the road's reputation had less to do with the number on the marker than what the experiences people claim to have had there.
[00:41:29] Whether the ghost truck is an enduring piece of Southwestern folklore or the product of exhausted drivers on an isolated highway or something far stranger is a question no one has answered to everyone's satisfaction. And what keeps the story alive isn't the truck itself. It's the feeling every witness describes in almost exactly the same way. That moment when they realized the vehicle behind them wasn't trying to get around them. It was trying to stay with them.
[00:41:58] And on a highway where the nearest help might be 30 miles away, that realization was terrifying enough all by itself. And I'm curious, my Darklings, have you ever had a strange encounter like this? Have you ever been on a long, lonely stretch of highway and seen lights or people appear? Maybe even an animal. Something that shouldn't be there. But you are a first-hand witness. Because I would love to hear from you.
[00:42:27] You can email me, Dave at Paranormal60.com That's Dave at Paranormal60.com It's time now to make a pit stop. So grab a snack, settle in for the rest of the drive. We have many miles to go before we sleep, my Darklings. All right, my Darklings, let's change things up. There are certain roads where people become accustomed to seeing deer standing at the edge of the tree line.
[00:42:53] The driver slow down, scan both sides of the ditch and wait for the animal to make the first move. It's a routine that's repeated thousands of times every day in rural America. The witnesses who found themselves on Bray Road in southeastern Wisconsin expected exactly that. Instead, they found something that shouldn't have been there. Bray Road winds quietly through the countryside outside the small community of Elkhorn.
[00:43:19] It's a peaceful landscape of dairy farms, rolling fields, and patches of thick woodland where darkness settles quickly once the sun disappears. There is nothing about the road itself that hints it would become one of the most famous cryptid locations in North America. Yet, beginning in the late 1980s, sheriff's deputies and local newspapers began receiving reports that sounded less like wildlife encounters and more like scenes from a classic horror film.
[00:43:49] One of the first widely reported encounters came from a woman driving home after work late one evening. She knew the road well and wasn't expecting anything more unusual than the occasional raccoon or deer crossing in front of her headlights. She rounded a gentle bend. The lights swept across what she assumed was a large animal feeding in the ditch. She eased off the accelerator, expecting it to bolt into the woods. Only it didn't.
[00:44:19] Instead, the creature slowly stood up. Not on the forelegs. On to two. She later estimated it stood well over six feet tall, covered in dark hair with broad shoulders and unusually long arms hanging almost to its knees. Its head resembled that of a wolf, complete with pointed ears and a long muzzle. But everything below the neck looked disturbingly human in proportion.
[00:44:48] It didn't stumble or struggle to balance. It stood comfortably, as though walking upright was perfectly natural. Then it turned its head and looked directly at her. Years later, she would still describe that moment with remarkable clarity. It wasn't simply that she had seen something unusual. It was the feeling that whatever stood in her headlights was studying her just as carefully as she was studying it.
[00:45:17] For several long seconds, neither moved. Then, without displaying the slightest sign of panic, the creature stepped across the road on two legs before dropping effortlessly onto all fours and disappearing into the darkness beyond the tree line. She drove the remaining miles home in complete silence. The next morning, she convinced herself there had to be an explanation. And perhaps poor lighting had distorted the appearance of a bear.
[00:45:47] Maybe she'd encountered an unusually large dog standing on its hind legs. The longer she thought about it, the more determined she became to explain away what she had seen. The determination lasted until she discovered she wasn't alone.
[00:46:02] Over the following months, similar reports began arriving from other motorists who had never met one another in any cases, had no idea anyone else had explained something similar or experienced it for themselves. A farmer reported seeing a large wolf-like creature running upright through one of his fields before dropping onto all fours, clearing a fence with astonishing ease.
[00:46:28] Another driver described nearly striking a massive animal that calmly crossed Bray Road on two legs without showing the slightest fear of the approaching vehicle. One witness claimed the creature was feeding on fresh roadkill when it looked up at the sound of an approaching engine, lifted its massive head, and fixed the driver with an intense stare before dragging the carcass into the woods with surprising strength.
[00:46:55] As the reports accumulated, they attracted the attention of local journalist Linda Godfrey, who initially approached the stories expecting to uncover a misunderstanding or perhaps an elaborate local joke. Instead, she found ordinary people who were visibly uncomfortable discussing what they had experienced. They weren't seeking publicity. In fact, many were reluctant to have their names published because they feared becoming the subject of ridicule.
[00:47:22] The more Godfrey investigated, the stranger the story became. Descriptions varied in small details, as eyewitness accounts often do, but the central image remained remarkably consistent. Witnesses described a powerful wolf-like creature capable of moving comfortably on both two legs and all four. Many commented on its muscular build and on its unusually intelligent-looking eyes. Nearly all agreed on one point.
[00:47:50] Whether they had seen this or not, they did not believe that it acted like any known animal native to Wisconsin. Naturally, wildlife experts offered more conventional possibilities. Black bears can stand upright for short periods, particularly when trying to identify unfamiliar scents.
[00:48:09] Large dogs seen under poor lighting can appear distorted, and eyewitnesses observing something unexpected at night may unintentionally exaggerate size, posture, or position. Those explanations, of course, deserve consideration. Yet, they leave one persistent question. Why did so many independent witnesses spread across different months and different years continue describing essentially the same creature?
[00:48:37] Today, Bray Road has become something of a destination for paranormal enthusiasts, cryptid researchers and curious travelers hoping to catch a glimpse of whatever inspired the legend. Most leave having seen nothing more unusual than farmland, quiet woods, and the occasional deer crossing the road. But every now and then, someone returns with a story. Not of glowing eyes deep in the forest.
[00:49:04] Not of distant howls echoing through the night. But of a solitary figure standing beside the road. Waiting just beyond the reach of the headlights. Before calmly rising onto two legs and disappearing into the darkness as though it had done so thousand times before.
[00:49:25] So whether the beast of Bray Road is an undiscovered animal, an extraordinary case of mistaken identity, or something that simply defies to fit any category we've created, one fact remains difficult to ignore. More than three decades after the first reports made headlines, people are still slowing down on that lonely Wisconsin road. Not because they're watching for deer.
[00:49:52] But because they're quietly wondering what might be watching them from the side of the road. I actually had the chance to speak with Linda Godfrey personally on numerous occasions at paranormal conventions. And I was always struck by the sincerity of her investigations. Having put herself out in those locations where the beast of Bray Road was known to be stalking.
[00:50:16] And the stories she would tell me of hearing things circling her and her group just outside of the reach of the light from their flashlights. They could hear something growling, low rumbling, stomping, snorting, hissing around them. So they stood there, terrified and unsure what to do next.
[00:50:39] I believe Linda Godfrey because I believe the research that she was doing and the fact that she was a respected journalist who wanted to get to the answers. And you know, the stories don't just surround Linda Godfrey and those type of tales at night. There is a story that appeared about 15, 20 years ago of a worker who was picking up roadkill off the side of the road. And he had thrown a deer carcass into the back of his truck.
[00:51:04] He was sitting there checking his map and looking at where his next stop was going to be when suddenly he felt the bed of his truck fake. Something jumped into the truck, grabbed the carcass of this full grown deer, sprang from the truck and ran into the woods. This worker saw it. He saw it himself in daylight.
[00:51:25] So whether you believe in Bigfoot or the Wolfman, vampires or other creatures of the night, there is something happening on our planet. Many people from many walks of life are witnessing it. Are you one of them? By the autumn of 1979, Jeff and Pauline Simpson had already spent several enjoyable days traveling through France with their friends, Len and Cynthia Gisby. Their destination was Spain.
[00:51:55] But like so many vacations before GPS and smartphones, the journey itself was part of the adventure. They wandered off the main highways whenever an interesting village appeared on a road sign. They took scenic back roads instead of faster routes and rarely worried if a wrong turn added another hour to the day's drive. Late one afternoon, however, a wrong turn became several wrong turns.
[00:52:21] And what had started as a leisurely drive through the French countryside slowly turned into something much less enjoyable. The roads grew narrower. Traffic became almost non-existent. And the villages they encountered seemed increasingly isolated. By the time the sun began slipping below the horizon, the four travelers agreed they only had one priority left.
[00:52:48] They needed to find somewhere to spend the night before darkness settled in completely. After what they later described as an unusually long search, they rounded a bend and saw a modest roadside hotel sitting quietly by itself. It wasn't the sort of place that appeared in travel brochures. There were no bright signs, no busy parking lot, and no indication that it catered to tourists.
[00:53:12] It simply looked like an old country inn that had been serving weary travelers for generations. Relieved to have found a place to stay, they carried in their luggage. Almost immediately, they noticed the hotel seemed strangely old-fashioned. The furnishings were heavy and traditional. The decor looked decades out of date. And the atmosphere felt unlike any hotel they'd ever visited anywhere in France. Nothing appeared neglected or abandoned.
[00:53:42] On the contrary, everything was clean and well-maintained. It simply felt as though time had passed more slowly inside these walls than it had anywhere else in France. The proprietor greeted them politely, registered them without ceremony, and handed them large brass room keys. Their rooms were uncomfortable but remarkably simple.
[00:54:05] Furnished with sturdy wooden beds, thick shutters over the windows, and furniture that seemed to belong to another generation. One member of the group later recalled thinking that it felt less like a commercial hotel and more like spending the night in someone's carefully preserved family home. After dinner, they retired for the evening. Slept soundly and met again with the following morning for breakfast. Nothing about the meal struck them as unusual.
[00:54:32] Although, everyone remarked on how inexpensive the stay had been. Even after accounting for the exchange rate, the bill seemed surprisingly low. They settled their account, thanked the proprietor for his hospitality, took several photographs of the building before leaving, and then continued southward Spain. It wasn't until the return journey several days later that the experience became impossible to explain.
[00:55:00] Remembering what a pleasant stop the little hotel had been, the group decided to spend another night there before crossing back into England. Confident they could find it again, they retraced the same roads through the same countryside until they reached the stretch where all four distinctly remembered the hotel standing. Only, it wasn't there. At first, they assumed they had driven past the entrance without noticing it. They turned around and drove the road again, this time much more slowly.
[00:55:31] Still, there was nothing. They repeated the drive a third time before stopping in a nearby village to ask for directions. According to the accounts later published by the travelers, the people they questioned appeared puzzled by the description. Some insisted there had never been a hotel along that particular road. Others could offer no explanation at all. The farther they searched, the stranger the experience became.
[00:55:59] They all remembered the same details. They remembered checking in, eating breakfast, paying the bill, and taking photographs before leaving. Yet despite returning to what they believed was the exact same location, the hotel had seemingly vanished. Without a trace. After returning home to Britain, they sent their vacation film away to be developed. Every photograph from the beginning of their trip appeared exactly as expected.
[00:56:27] The photographs taken after they left the mysterious hotel were equally clear. But the images they remembered taking during their overnight stay, including photographs of the hotel itself? You guessed it. They were missing. Whether the film had been failed or the frames had somehow been exposed incorrectly or something else had happened, they couldn't say.
[00:56:54] They only knew that the pictures they were certain they had taken were no longer there. Over the years, researchers have suggested a variety of explanations. Some have proposed that the travelers simply became confused about the location and were unable to relocate the hotel on their journey home.
[00:57:16] Others have suggested the missing photographs were the result of an ordinary camera malfunction, while skeptics have argued that memory itself can become surprisingly unreliable after an unusual experience. None of those explanations have ever been conclusively proven, and neither has the extraordinary alternative. What keeps the story alive is the consistency of the witnesses.
[00:57:42] Four people shared the same journey, remembered the same hotel, recalled eating the same breakfast, and together they searched for the same building that they believed simply disappeared. Now, researchers often place the Simpson and Gisby account into a category known as a time slip. The term doesn't explain what happened.
[00:58:06] It merely acknowledges that some witnesses believe they briefly encountered a place that seemed disconnected from the normal passage of time. Whether that's what Jeff and Pauline Simpson and Len Grisby and Cynthia Grisby experienced on that autumn evening in 1979 remains one of those questions that has never been answered to anyone's satisfaction. Perhaps they simply became lost in the French countryside and later remembered the route incorrectly.
[00:58:34] Perhaps there was an ordinary explanation for the missing photographs that no one recognized at the time, or perhaps four ordinary travelers searching for nothing more remarkable than a place to spend the night, knowingly checked into a hotel that belonged to another chapter of history, before quietly returning to their own outside the twilight zone. Sorry, I couldn't resist that one.
[00:59:01] Time slips are a phenomenon that I found extremely exciting and interesting. Ah, yes, we've saved our most unusual destination for last because it's one of the few places where nearly every type of paranormal encounter has been reported.
[00:59:18] People have described unexplained lights hovering over the road, impossible creatures standing at the edge of the headlights, hours of missing time and experiences so bizarre they've spent years trying to convince themselves they imagined it. In just a few moments, we're going to take you there. If you've ever driven across northeastern Utah, you already know that there's something different about the landscape.
[00:59:45] The highways seem to stretch forever, winding between mesas and broad valleys where you can drive for miles without seeing another vehicle. During the day, it's beautiful country. At night, it can feel as though you've left the modern world behind altogether. And it was along these lonely roads, particularly those surrounding what's become known as Skinwalker Ranch, that a remarkable collection of eyewitness accounts began to emerge.
[01:00:12] Ranchers, law enforcement officers, oil field workers, truck drivers, and ordinary families have all described experiences that refuse to fit neatly into a single category of logic. One witness reports strange lights. Another describes an enormous animal standing beside the highway. Someone else loses an hour of time they can never account for.
[01:00:36] Yet another swears an object paced their vehicle silently for miles before accelerating into the night sky. Standing alone, any one of those stories might be easy to dismiss. But taken together, they become much more difficult to ignore. One truck driver described making his regular route through the Uinta Basin long after midnight when he noticed what he assumed was another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction.
[01:01:04] The light remained unusually bright, but never seemed to get any closer. As he continued driving, it suddenly left the roadway altogether, rose silently above the desert floor, and began pacing his truck from several hundred feet away.
[01:01:18] He watched it through the passenger window for nearly two miles before it accelerated straight upward, disappearing into the sky so quickly that he could only sit in stunned silence, wondering whether he had actually seen what he just saw. Another family recalled driving home after visiting relatives when their children began pointing toward a hillside overlooking the highway.
[01:01:44] Expecting to see a deer, the parents looked up just in time to notice a massive animal standing perfectly still against the skyline. They estimated it was much larger than any wolf they'd ever seen, yet it stood with an odd confidence, showing no fear of the approaching vehicle.
[01:02:04] As they slowed to get a better look, the animal calmly turned, walked behind a cluster of sagebrush, and simply failed to emerge from the other side. Then there are stories investigators find hardest to categorize. Drivers have reported reaching home hours later than expected, with no memory of where the missing time had gone.
[01:02:29] Others have described radio stations fading into complete silence before returning as suddenly as they disappeared. Cell phones lose service. Engines behave erratically. Compasses spin without explanation. Some witnesses insist they experienced an overwhelming feeling that they were being watched long before anything unusual actually happened.
[01:02:54] A sensation so powerful that they abandoned whatever plans they had and drove away as quickly as they could. The Uinta Basin has become one of the most intensely studied paranormal locations in the world, precisely because no single explanation seems capable of accounting for everything people report. UFO researchers find compelling aerial encounters. Cryptid investigators focus on the strange animal sightings.
[01:03:23] Paranormal investigators point to accounts of shadowy figures and unexplained voices. Indigenous traditions speak of the skinwalker, of being deeply rooted in Navajo belief and deserving of respect rather than sensationalism. Each perspective offers part of the picture, yet none seem to explain the entirety of the situation. And perhaps that's the real mystery.
[01:03:52] Whether those encounters represent misunderstood natural phenomena, psychological suggestion, folklore, or something that science has yet to understand remains one of the great unanswered questions of the paranormal. Whatever the explanation, there is no denying that the roads surrounding the Uinta Basin have earned a reputation unlike anywhere else in America.
[01:04:18] Because on those lonely highways, people don't simply report seeing something strange. They return home questioning the very nature of the reality they live in. So the next time you find yourself traveling after dark, don't just watch the road ahead. Pay attention. Look a little longer into the tree line. Glance in the rear view mirror once in a while.
[01:04:46] Notice the lights in the distance. Because most journeys isn't exactly where we expect them to take us. And every once in a great while, someone comes home with a story they never imagined they'd be telling. Personally, I've been to the Uinta Basin many times now. And I'm going to be back there again in September for Phenomicon. And I can't wait.
[01:05:13] We're going to be going to Space Wolf Ranch, which is the adjacent properties Skinwalker Ranch. Adjacent to the point you can literally walk right up to the fence of Skinwalker Ranch. And I have stepped over that. We've had strange experiences. I've been there with Dr. Maria Mayer from Expedition Bigfoot. And we have had strange encounters with things stalking us. The sound of a child answering a question from a heavily wooded area. It seems impossible.
[01:05:43] But we've seen it and witnessed it ourselves. As a matter of fact, Dr. Maria Mayer, as much as she's interested in primates and Bigfoot and the cryptid phenomena, told me, Dave, I really hope I can see a UFO. And the first time we went to Space Wolf Ranch together, we were walking around the property getting ready to take off and do this walkthrough. When suddenly a bright light appeared in the sky. It danced in a way she had never seen before.
[01:06:12] So profoundly that it affected her. She yelled out, oh my God, Dave, I see a UFO. And it wasn't acting like any kind of plane. It wasn't acting like a, um, uh, a drone. It was moving at breakneck speeds, moving about, and then simply vanished. Walking along the wooded line, heading towards the back part of the property that is adjacent and directly connects to the Skinwalker Ranch.
[01:06:39] There were times we would stop because we could hear something pacing us, something walking in the wooded area off to the right, to the left, as though it was stalking us. I even stopped at one point. We, we tried to do EVP electronic voice phenomena, and we were capturing voices responding back to us.
[01:07:00] We were lucky enough to get to go back last year with a, a bunch of, uh, fans of the paranormal who, uh, elected to join Dr. Maria Mayer and myself and go out to space Wolf Ranch. We're going to be going back out there again. And maybe what we'll do on a future episode is I'll have Dr. Mayor come on and we'll talk about our experiences there. What it is like to be in that environment. Because if you watch the shows about Skinwalker Ranch, it's easy to feel that disconnect. Thank God, it's just a TV show, right?
[01:07:29] But when you've actually been there and you can feel the unsettling nature of the land itself, as beautiful and majestic as it is, it holds mysteries. It holds secrets. And it makes me wonder why. Why is it holding back? Why isn't it giving us the information? Or is it in bite-sized chunks? And are we ready for what it truly reveals when it finally does? Thank you for joining me on this journey tonight.
[01:07:57] I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I've enjoyed sharing it with you. I am Dave Schrader, your host, and this is our paranormal 60. This is my favorite part! This one is A
